the Pan-hellenic Coordination Committee of Animal Welfare Unions AND ITS action

The Panhellenic Coordination Committee of Animal Welfare Unions (briefly: Π.Σ.Ε.) was created in the summer 2008. The idea of its creation began from the Union of Chania Animal Protection and was based on the fact that the animal welfare movement in Greece had no cohesion, with animal welfare group all over Greece that did not communicate with each other.

It sprangs from the idea that the problems of animals in Greece need to be addressed with scientifically approved positions and suggestions, massive struggles, with the State supporting all our activities and actions.

It sprangs from the thought that the problem of animals, and mainly companion animals, has to be fought in its root, in order to stop reproducing itself. The efforts of animal welfare groups toprotect thestray animals and care about them are necessary, but it cannot solve the problem – on the contrary, it prolonged it, as the State expected from the act and did not take action itself. The State has to takemeasures to stop theproblem and educate the citizens, so that, in the long run, we can hope thatthere will be no stray animals, no circus animals, participation of our country in European efforts to ban animal testing in cosmetics or use of animals for fur production.

Asan initiative group it is rather informal, it acts on the basis of the democratic principles and the is a central authority of 7 members which makes suggestions to the  members and then it coordinates the decisions taken from all the unions.

The strategic goal of PSEZS (Π.Σ.Ε.) is to persuade, press, force the State, in anyway, legal or activist, within the country or outofit, to do something about the problems of the animals, to take measures immediately towards the solution of the problems, so that they finally stop giving just promises and making wishes.

Inthisway, all our efforts since the foundation of the PSEZS are mainly addressed to the State, the Government, the ministries in charge and other relative and competent state authorities.

Since 2008 we have began coordinated contacts with the competent authorities, to whom we have already submitted fully feasible and scientifically approved positions on many matters. Today we cooperate with the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, with the Ministry of Environment for matters concerning hunting, the Ministry of Civil Protection for the legal obligations of  police officers concerning animals welfare, the Ministry of Education, Lifelong Education and Religion, for the education and sensitization of the new generationconcerning domestic animals and wildlife.

Our suggestions, mainly to the Ministry of Rural Development and Foods, are aimed at solving the problems or improving the situation.

Our action since 2008 is multiple, including demonstrations outside the Ministry of Rural Development and Foods, cooperation with major foreign animal welfare organizations, letters to the competent ministries accusing them of indifference and lack of action, communication with the competent authorities of the European Union, foreign newspapers as a means of pressure, information in the internet, promotion of the matter though the media and television or radio programmes as well as often “bombing” of the Ministries in order to take action.
